The boat surges forward, and suddenly the sand drops beneath my feet.
The rope on the parasail pulls tight, and for a few heartbeats, we skim the water like skipping stones. Spray cools my calves, and then my feet aren’t touching anything at all.
We rise.
The boat shrinks beneath us, its engine a distant snarl swallowed by the wind. The ocean stretches in every direction, a vast sheet of molten blue glass flecked with sunlight. From up here, the waves look gentle, like brushed silk instead of something that can knock you over and tug you under.
I suck in a breath of awe at the beautiful view from above.
The island curves below us in a crescent of white sand and lush green jungle. Palm trees dot the shoreline. It looks unreal from this height, like a postcard from a tropical paradise.
The wind rushes past my ears, tugging at my hair. The sail snaps softly above me, steady and strong, and for a moment I forget about cameras, eliminations, and brain tumors.
There’s only one thing I can’t forget.
Him.
“I like this position for us,” he murmurs directly into my ear, sending a traitorous shiver that trails fire along my spine.
“Us?” I repeat. “Do you want a slave or a girlfriend?”
“Which would upset your cousin the most?”
Betrayal and rage howl through my soul. I thought we’d moved past this. Thought I was beginning to mean something more to him. But nothing’s changed.
I struggle against the harness, even though I know it’s pointless.
“It all comes back to one thing, doesn’t it?” I say bitterly. “You only want to use me.”
Tears prick my eyes. Not that he can see. Not that he’d care.
I lean forward, as though that will help me get away from him. I wish I had my wand. I should have a word with Alexander about allowing us to bring them with us to rewards.
“Stop. Squirming,” Sterling hisses.
“Don’t tell me what to do,” I snap, then go still a second later when I notice what’s happened.
Up here, there’s nowhere to move. No pretending I don’t feel him pressing into the small of my back.
The heat I feel is worse than earlier. It dips low, between my thighs, in response to his arousal.
This is not happening. I am not turned on by him. I can’t be. It’s sick and so very wrong.
“You’ve become awfully quiet up there,” Sterling says huskily.
“I’m enjoying the view. Pretending you’re not here.” My words are too breathy. It’s probably too much to hope he believes it’s due to the wind.
He chuckles but doesn’t call me out. Instead, he traces his finger on my hip. “Which rune am I touching?”
It takes me a moment to trust my voice.
“The one that gives you seven years bad luck.”
“And here?” he asks, trailing his finger to a new area of skin before brushing circles with his thumb.
“That one will give you nightmares.”
“And this?”
“Makes everything you drink taste like urine.”
“Wow, quite the collection of horrors,” Sterling says in amusement.
His hand never leaves my thigh and, heaven help me, I don’t want him to let go just yet. We both know what this is—a dangerous game. Him with his thin excuse for touching, testing how much I’ll allow.
I let him touch.
I let him keep touching.

My obsession with reading started over 30+ years ago when I went to my first Scholastic Book Fair and found R.L. Stine's Fear Street series. Later, I came across Anne Rice's novels at my public library when I was fourteen when my obsession with vampires started. I was the girl who preferred to be a vampire over a princess any day. My husband says I would leave him a heartbeat for a vampire that looked like Spike or Angel (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) or Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Diaries. (It's true, though, and he's accepted it.)
