I’ve been loving the Maxton Hall show on Amazon Prime and can’t wait for the last season that debuts later this year, so I knew I had to read the last book it does appear. I read the first two books of the Maxton Hall trilogy last year and enjoyed them. After finishing Save Us, I thought it was okay, but it won’t be a favorite in the series.
My main issue was the increased number of POVs this time around, not just Ruby and James. Those frequent shifts between characters made the pacing feel erratic and pulled me out of the main romance I was most invested in. If the book had stuck to their storyline, or at least only included Lydia’s, I probably would have enjoyed it more.
After the last book’s ending, I wanted to know how James would confront his father, especially for what he did to Ruby. It takes a bit for James to find his backbone in this book, but he does after something is revealed toward the end that shocks not only him but Lydia too. No spoilers from me. I’m just glad that James’s father will no longer be a problem, and that James and Ruby can live the lives they want without anyone threatening them or Ruby’s family.
I’m also glad that Lydia finally gets her own HEA in this book with the one she loves, after she finally reveals the truth to that person. Reading how she gets closure and happiness made me feel genuinely happy for her, especially after everything she went through in this series, including this book, due to her father. That man truly was an evil man.
Ruby’s sister, Ember, also gets her own HEA after Ruby finds out the truth about who Ember has been sneaking off to see, which readers already know through Ember’s POV. Personally, I would have preferred Ember’s story as a spin-off from this series instead of being included in this storyline.
Overall, this book was predictable and less compelling than the other books in the trilogy, but still enjoyable, and it had a satisfying ending. I give it 3.5 stars. I’m glad I picked up the trilogy, and hopefully Mona Kasten’s other books will be translated as well, so I can check them out; otherwise, I will be learning German to read them.
If you are looking for more similar New Adult Romances like this one, I recommend Elle Kennedy’s Off-Campus series (which is another TV adaptation) or even Penelope Douglas’s Fall Away series. I’ll even recommend watching Cruel Intentions (the movie), if you haven’t seen it, for similar vibes too, but a lot darker in my opinion.
Would I recommend the Maxton Hall Trilogy? Yes. If you enjoy New Adult Romance where two characters who are complete opposites and originally hate one another fight every obstacle to be together, including a toxic family member, then add the Maxton Hall books to your TBR. Also, check out the TV adaptation, Maxton Hall, on Amazon Prime. (The last season premieres in December 2026.)
