three-half-stars

The Granger brothers left behind their family's Virginia estate-and the bad memories it holds-years ago. But their dying grandfather's request brings them home:to a failing business, a legacy of secrets and a deathbed promise to make things right.
As the eldest brother, attorney Jace Granger is determined to take responsibility for Granger Aeronautics, his family's failing business. But the years of mismanagement seem impossible to untangle. As CEO, he hires a consultant to turn the company around. Smart, sexy Shana Bradford is the right person for the job-and the right woman to turn Jace's world upside down.
But the passion between them is jeopardized when old secrets begin to emerge. A woman from Jace's past suddenly reappears. And an explosive discovery changes everything Jace thinks he knows about his mother-and his father, who was convicted of her murder.
Jace Granger tried to leave his family history behind once before. But this time he needs to face the past...or risk losing his future.
Three brothers. One legacy. A lifetime of secrets.

A Brother’s Honor is the first book I’ve read by author Brenda Jackson, and I definitely plan to read the rest of the Grangers series as well as explore her entire backlist. I enjoy discovering new (to me) authors, and I’ve been intending to read Brenda Jackson’s books for quite some time now.

I originally tried to read A Brothers’ Honor back in April 2024 but decided to set it aside until I could focus my full attention on it. It wasn’t grabbing my attention back then, largely due to my life circumstances at the time; my youngest child was sick, and I struggled to read any book around that time. Fortunately, I was able to pick up the book again (October 2024), and I could find myself fully engaged in the story, especially the second half of the story.

This series is a family saga that introduces the Granger brothers and their father. The Granger sons, Jace, Dalton, and Caden, have been living their own lives elsewhere and decided years ago never to take over the family’s business, Granger Aeronautics. Unfortunately, something happens to their grandfather, which has them coming back together. Their grandfather wants them to finally take over the family company and also find out what really happened to their mother since he believes his son (their father) never unalived her. The Granger men promised their grandfather they’d do what was necessary to take care of the company and also find a way to prove their father’s innocence. The eldest Granger, Jace Granger, takes on the company full force and is determined to find out how to save his family’s legacy. He hires a consultant, Shauna, who is determined to investigate what is happening with Granger Aeronautics.

I enjoyed the first book of the Granger series, but I found the beginning a bit slow, particularly regarding the main characters and their storyline, especially the romance aspect. Brenda tended to focus on every Granger character except the main characters, Jace and Shauna. It took some time for me to adjust, as I wanted the storyline to center more on Jace and Shauna and their slow-burn romance. However, I appreciated learning more about the other Grangers, including Caden, Dalton, and their father.

It did take a bit for the romantic storyline to surface, which, as a romance reader, can be a struggle to wait. I did like the mystery aspect of the story, where Shauna tries to uncover who is sabotaging the Granger company. I was surprised by the identity of the saboteur because Brenda didn’t provide any hints that pointed to them, at least not to me.

One aspect of the story I didn’t like was the ongoing drama involving Jace’s ex-wife. Jace often felt compelled to help her out of difficult situations, which he really shouldn’t have done. However, I appreciated how Shauna remained unaffected by his ex. Shauna was a strong woman who handled everything far better than I would have, and that’s why I loved her character.

Overall, I would rate this book 3.5 stars. I’m definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the series, especially after how Brenda Jackson introduced the other Grangers in this installment. I do wish the book had focused more on Jace and Shauna, as I think it would have enhanced my enjoyment of the story.

Single/Dual/Multi POV: Multi-POV (Third Person)

Standalone or Part of Series: It’s the first book in the Granger series.

I guess I should type a bio here. I'm FranJessca, or Fran for short. I'm the owner/reviewer behind A Book Lovin' Mama's Blog. I've been reading and reviewing books on my blog since leaving the Navy in 2011, and I will keep doing it as long as possible. My favorite genres will always be Romance & Fantasy, and I read every subgenre underneath those two genres. (Sorry, not a fan of nonfiction, so don't try to convince me to read it.)
My obsession with reading started over 30+ years ago when I went to my first Scholastic Book Fair and found R.L. Stine's Fear Street series. Later, I came across Anne Rice's novels at my public library when I was fourteen when my obsession with vampires started. I was the girl who preferred to be a vampire over a princess any day. My husband says I would leave him a heartbeat for a vampire that looked like Spike or Angel (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) or Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Diaries. (It's true, though, and he's accepted it.)
