Curator Dr. Louisa Hancock left behind Maine and her troubled past for Philadelphia and a job at a prominent museum. Just when it seems that Louisa’s new life is safe from her dark secrets, the body of a museum intern is found—the victim of a brutal and baffling murder.
Louisa realizes this is no random crime. And when another intern goes missing, the abduction is linked to the only man who has ever tempted Louisa’s heart—Conor Sullivan, the sexy owner of a Philly sports bar. Louisa’s past has taught her to be wary, but her heart refuses to believe Conor is guilty.
Now Conor and Louisa must dodge a police investigation—and their growing desire—as they race to find the real killer before another girl turns up dead. But trusting Conor could be deadly, especially as the evidence against him mounts…and as a merciless killer targets Louisa as the next victim.
Midnight Betrayal is the third book in Melinda Leigh’s Midnight series. I’ve had this book on my bookshelves since it was released in 2014 and found myself craving a suspenseful storyline, which I knew Melinda could deliver. I’m kicking myself for not reading this book sooner because it reminded me how much I miss reading the Romantic Suspense. The thrill of trying to figure out who the killer is in the story and how Melinda Leigh gives readers not only the MC’s POVs but the killer’s too, but you don’t know who it is until the end.
This was the case when one of the interns at the museum where Louisa works was found dead. The FMC, Louisa, relocated from Maine to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to get away from what happened at her last job. She never thought she would be helping with another case and this one close to her work again. She has help from Connor, who helped her in Maine, but now he’s the main suspect because he was the last to see the intern alive at the bar that he owns. Louisa knows he can’t be the killer, and now Louisa and Connor need to figure out who is actually behind the killing of the intern so that they can clear Connor’s name.
I loved that Louisa and Connor were back together, but I didn’t like it because they were dealing with murder again, which was hitting close to both of them now. These two characters had been through a lot already, but I knew with them working together, they would figure it out before the police figured it out. However, when it comes to Melinda’s books, even the characters were baffled by who was behind it in the end. I was shocked, but this is why I adore Melinda’s books. She leaves you guessing the whole time, thinking you have figured it out, and then she surprises you with a twist.
One of my favorite parts in this book was how Connor was not willing to give up on Louisa when it came to how he felt for her, and I loved how Louisa was there for Connor in clearing his name because she knew he could never harm anyone.
Melinda Leigh delivered yet another book that I had a hard time putting down, and once again, I’m kicking myself for not reading this book sooner. This book/series is exactly what I needed, and I can’t wait to finish this series and pick up the rest of the books I’ve missed out on reading that Melinda Leigh has written.
