Synopsis:
One apartment. One fake boyfriend. One agreement waiting to be broken.
Makayla:
I’m tired of my dad playing matchmaker.
As a music teacher juggling life with sickle cell disease, I don’t have time—or energy—for forced dinner dates with “eligible men.”
So, I come up with a plan: find a fake boyfriend, let him move in, and make it believable.
Daniel was never supposed to say yes.
He’s a grumpy, emotionally walled-off lawyer who hates chaos and clings to solitude.
But now he’s in my apartment—tall, brooding, infuriatingly neat—and fitting into my world way too easily.
I don’t believe in love. Not when life has taught me it rarely sticks around.
But something about him feels dangerously real.
Daniel:
Something about her captured my attention the moment I met her.
I knew I was in trouble.
Controlled and always alone—that’s who I’ve been.
But I said yes before I could stop myself.
Because moving into her tea-scented, music-filled home was the only way I could be close to her.
She’s sunshine and sharp edges. She hums while stirring honey into her cup and smiles through pain like it’s nothing.
This was supposed to be pretend.
But with every stolen glance and late-night conversation, the line between real and fake keeps slipping.
She doesn’t believe in love.
I never thought it was possible.
But living with her is rewriting everything I thought I knew—
And walking away might not be an option.

I’m quiet throughout my ride to the studio. Wes and I don’t get along. Most times, I’m happy- go- lucky with people but Wes somehow makes my skin crawl, not sure why but he’s not in my friendly circle vibe.
What about Uncle Dan? My notorious bad angel asks.
“What about him?”
The moment we laid eyes on him, we felt a spark, and when we touched him, it was like an electric jolt through the body. I was overcome with feelings that were completely foreign to me.
“Yeah, so? That happens whenever I see a good-looking guy.”
“Does it though?”
“Fine, it doesn’t but…”
“But what?”
“I doubt, he’s my type nor I his type.”
Let me get this straight: angular features, strong jawline, dark hair with sexy brown eyes, tall, fit and soft hands isn’t your type. And let’s not forget well dressed and that classic fresh scent with a hint of spicy that tantalized our senses.”
“How did you notice all that?”
I didn’t, you did.
Okay, then be quiet. I need my head in the game and I’m off sex for the next couple of months.
In case you didn’t know, we are slowly becoming dry land.
Good.
“We are here,” Wes says, pulling to a stop.
“Thank you,” I say, opening the door.
“Any chance you and I can talk later?” he asks.
“About?” I say, already getting out of the car and my defense is rising as well.
“Us.”
My irritation is instant. His attitude and mannerism makes my skin crawl.
“There’s no us,” I say, closing the door and walking briskly into the building. Sean, the security guy, buzzes me in. I’m glad he’s not chatty today because, I’m not in the mood as well. My ride up to the music studio is quiet.
“That Wes guy isn’t giving up,” my good angel says.
“He needs to look elsewhere. I don’t like him, and he thinks asking me repeatedly is going to change my mind.”
“Could he?”
“Could he what?”
“Could he be the someone we think is following us?” My mind pauses for a moment, but I don’t get that gut fear around him, just irritation.
“Much as I don’t like him, I don’t think it’s him.”
I use my access card to enter the studio and find my friends. Jordan, the now mega star whose stage name is Cole A, and Andrea, his girlfriend, who has told me she and I are now best friends. I love her for her sometimes too blunt truthfulness and genuine friendship. Every time I see her, I think she’s Jill Scott, without the voice but with the wide smile and energy.
“MAK, you made it,” she shouts like I just came back from a trip, and we didn’t have dinner together last night.
“I did, not like someone was giving me a chance to say no.”
“Very funny,” Jordan says. He’s the epitome of tall dark and handsome or, as Nkem, my bestie, would say, tall, chocolate and delightful. And his voice is amazing, he’s truly blessed.
“Come on, MAK. Let’s use those magic ears of yours.”
I join Ross and Jordan and listen to the track. My mind switches to work and I forget all about Uncle Dan.
