It's an especially deadly winter in the Pacific Northwest, as rising star FBI profiler Laurel Snow hunts down a serial killer with a chillingly bitter M.O., in New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Zanetti's edgy thriller . . .
Men are dying in the Pacific Northwest, their bodies found near churches, charities, and counseling centers--each with valentine candy hearts shoved down their throats. They're good men with families and community ties--or so they seem until Laurel Snow and her team begin to investigate. Then the case takes a shockingly personal turn when the father she's never met, a former pastor, turns up among the dead.
Now, besides solving her father's murder, Laurel is on the hunt to discover the truth of his past. Complicating things is Laurel's troubled half-sister, Abigail, a brilliant sociopath determined to prove that they've both inherited their father's malignant narcissism.
Assisting Laurel is Washington Fish and Wildlife Captain Huck Rivers, a dangerous loner whose reliance on gut instinct puts him at odds with Laurel's coolly analytic approach. But the choice may be moot when the killer hones in on Huck's own dark secrets--putting him and Laurel squarely in the crosshairs.
You Can Die is the third installment in Rebecca Zanetti’s Laurel Snow Thrillers, and it has quickly become one of my favorite series since I started reading it last year. I love the main character, Laurel Snow, who is a special FBI agent. While she might be socially awkward, she is a strong, determined, and intelligent heroine who always catches her serial killers.
Laurel is investigating a series of mysterious deaths in the Pacific Northwest, where men are being found dead at churches and charities with candy hearts stuffed down their throats. She and her team must uncover why these specific men are being targeted and what connects them. Among the victims is her biological father, someone Laurel never thought she would ever meet. At the same time she’s trying to solve a serial killer case, she’s trying to unravel her half-sister Abigail’s motives; Abigail believes that she and Laurel share certain traits from their father’s genes. However, Laurel feels that she is nothing like her real father or her half-sister, and she’s determined to take down Abigail at whatever cost.
This book was once again thrilling and engaging, keeping me on the edge of my seat as I tried to uncover the identity of the serial killer alongside Laurel Snow. I was also invested in Laurel’s struggle against her half-sister, a character I have found unlikeable since the first book. From the moment she was introduced, I sensed that she had sinister intentions toward Laurel. This woman won’t leave Laurel alone and has even tried to persuade her to break things off with Huck, her current boyfriend. Thankfully, Laurel knows better than to trust her sister.
One of my favorite characters in this series, alongside Laurel, is Huck Rivers. He is very protective of Laurel and will do anything to keep her safe, especially when it comes to her half-sister. Their relationship has definitely evolved, and I can’t wait to see what happens between them in the final book of the series.
Overall, this installment in the series is another great one, and I give it 4.5 stars. If you enjoy Thrillers, the Laurel Snow series by Rebecca Zanetti is a must-read.
