Billionaire Lumberjack is the first book in Gwyn McNamee’s Lumberjacks in Love series, and each book can be read as a standalone. This was my first Lumberjack book, but not my first book where the MMC is a grumpy Mountain Man who doesn’t want to be bothered by the outside world. He has his reasons, which Gwyn McNamee reveals later on in the story.
Unfortunately, the MMC, Beau, is about to have company at his place when the heroine, Brooke, walks onto his property in the middle of a snowstorm after her truck breaks down on the mountain. He can’t very well turn her away, especially when the roads won’t be cleared for a while, and there’s no way for the Sheriff to send a helicopter to retrieve her. He’ll have to handle her being around until she can leave. Brooke isn’t sure about Beau at first, especially since he comes off as standoffish and grumpy. She’s scared of him at first, until Beau and her start to feel comfortable around each other. The issue is both are holding back secrets from one another, and that is when things will hit the fan later.
This was an enjoyable read, especially when I was listening to it on a road trip and reading it whenever I was in the hotel on my Kindle. Beau was the typical grumpy alpha male who had issues with people and kept his circle small. After I found out why, I understood him a bit better. He has a tragic and heartbreaking story, and it took someone like Brooke for him to open up again. He did worry me a bit at first with how he treated Brooke, but he had been secluded and on his own for a while, so it took him a bit to become a conversational and caring human being.
Brooke was a likable character, and I definitely felt for her after realizing why she was on that mountain in the first place. Brooke was a fighter, and I was rooting for her to have a HEA. She was escaping something, and it was obvious by how she was reacting to Beau’s attitude toward her that something had happened to her. I didn’t know what it was until it got closer to the end of the book. I definitely recommend readers check the trigger warnings prior to reading this book because Gwyn does go into detail on what happened.
This was a story about two characters who had something tragic happen to them, finding love with one another in a forced proximity, snowed-in novel. It does take a bit for the two to stop being stubborn with their feelings, but that’s due to them having to work out some things. One of them is the secrets they are holding from one another.
I give this book four stars, and I can’t wait to read more of the Lumberjacks in Love series.
****I loved that I owned both the Kindle and audiobook versions of this book because whenever I couldn’t sit down to read, I listened to the book, and the narrators, Lee Daniels and Bryant Walker, did a fabulous job of narrating this story. I definitely recommend the audiobook if you enjoy listening to your books.
