three-stars

When Jane returns to her hometown and wolf pack, she is faced with three prospects for mates, a family reunion gone amuck, and magical spells by her crazy aunts in an attempt to get her mated.
Witches, vampires and shifters come together in an epically hilarious adventure, which ends with a fire, a Rottweiler humping a witch and a naked encounter with a hunky cop.
Shifting ain't easy.

Southern Howl is the first book in H.M. McQueen’s Magic and Mayhem Southern Shift series. This was a fast-paced paranormal romance novella that involved the FMC, Jane returning home, and finding herself in the mince of having to decide between three prospects of mates that she never signed up for in the first place. One of them was her ex, who is a werewolf, like herself, whom she thought cheated on her years ago.

Jane is back at home during the Gathering, where it’s a tradition that everyone finds a mate for themselves. Unfortunately, she doesn’t want to participate but her family is in cohorts to make her participate. This book definitely was quirky and funny at times, but it was a little overwhelming, keeping up with everyone being introduced. I found it took away from the main storyline with Jane and her potential mate issue, especially when she was trying to hook up with someone else the entire time, which is why I didn’t feel she had a genuine connection with her actual mate. I think if I had read more about her and the exact person she’s supposed to be mated to, then I would have enjoyed the book more.

I give this novella three stars, and I’ll still recommend it to readers who are looking for a fast-paced PNR that has some funny moments between the characters and some steam to it.

I guess I should type a bio here. I'm FranJessca, or Fran for short. I'm the owner/reviewer behind A Book Lovin' Mama's Blog. I've been reading and reviewing books on my blog since leaving the Navy in 2011, and I will keep doing it as long as possible. My favorite genres will always be Romance & Fantasy, and I read every subgenre underneath those two genres. (Sorry, not a fan of nonfiction, so don't try to convince me to read it.)
My obsession with reading started over 30+ years ago when I went to my first Scholastic Book Fair and found R.L. Stine's Fear Street series. Later, I came across Anne Rice's novels at my public library when I was fourteen when my obsession with vampires started. I was the girl who preferred to be a vampire over a princess any day. My husband says I would leave him a heartbeat for a vampire that looked like Spike or Angel (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) or Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Diaries. (It's true, though, and he's accepted it.)
