I liked that L.J. Andrews added a recap of book one. It made it easier to remember what happened before starting the second book. I wish more fantasy series did this.
Heir of Twisted Lies is the last book in L.J. Andrews’ Broken Souls and Bones Duology. I liked the first book, so I was excited to see what happened next, especially after the big cliffhanger. I was also curious if there would be any groveling after the reveal at the end of book one.
When I started book two, I quickly knew there wouldn’t be much groveling. Lyra moves on from the betrayal fast since her life is still in danger because of her powers. Roarke is there to protect her, even though he betrayed her, and their feelings are too strong to ignore. The lack of groveling didn’t bother me much. There were other things that did, which I’ll talk about later.
I loved both Lyra and Roarke and how strong their love was, especially with everything they have been dealing with from the previous book into this one. Roarke wouldn’t let anyone hurt her, and Lyra was just as protective of him. Nothing could keep them apart, not even Roarke’s family. There was also more spice between Lyra and Roarke in this book. *spoiler*They did get married pretty quickly.*spoiler*
Sadly, this book didn’t keep my attention like the first one. The pacing was slower, and there wasn’t as much action or build-up. Too many new characters took the focus away from the main story. The ending also felt rushed and left me wanting more. I expected a bigger climax for the last book.
If I hadn’t cared so much about Lyra, who became a strong fighter, and Roarke, who became a favorite due to his protective/possessive nature and learning his backstory, I might not have finished this book. But I was committed to finding out if Lyra would finally find peace and happiness after everything, and what would happen with Roarke too. The main characters and their romance are definitely the strongest part of this duology.
As I said in my review of book one, these books reminded me of another trilogy with a magic caste system, but L.J. Andrews adds her own twist. Plus, this duology is meant for a more mature audience, unlike the trilogy it reminded me of.
Overall, I’d give the sequel three stars. This book may not have gripped me like the first one, but I’d still recommend it to anyone who likes Viking-inspired romantasy with magic and an enemies-to-lovers story. I’m just glad I found a new author, so I can check out her backlist (which I’ve already started on) and the other books she has in the works. =)
