A Vow of Eternal Night is Lily Crozier’s debut novel delivering a Beauty and the Beast retelling, but this time the beast is a vampire. If vampires are coming back in popularity in Romance/Fantasy novels, I’m here for it. As a reader who never gave up her obsession with vampires and always picks up books featuring them, I couldn’t pass up Vow of Eternal Night by Lily Crozier. The book cover alone sold me before I even read the synopsis.
The storyline hooked me immediately because of the haunting, scary setting and gothic vibes. It also caught my attention with some of my favorite tropes: enemies to lovers and forced proximity. These are two tropes I always read in a romance novel, and Lily Crozier did them very well.
The book is told solely from Clara’s POV, which didn’t bother me because it left the MMC’s thoughts to the imagination. The characters were well-written, and I adored both individually. Clara is determined, strong-willed, and independent but sometimes naive and puts herself at risk. I loved how she confronted not only Raleigh but also her father and another villain introduced in the book. Her risk-taking stressed me out, though at times, and I wanted to go through the book and confront her about it, but I reminded myself she’s fictional and she’ll figure it out.
The MMC, Raleigh, Prince of Rostenburg, is what I expect as a vampire: not sparkly, but bump-in-the-night scary, and even though he comes off as morally grey at first, I knew he had a backstory that needed to be told. He wasn’t downright ugly to Clara, even when he kidnapped her. He gave her a choice, even at the end of the book, which I liked about him. Now, he may not have attacked her, but when it came to others, that didn’t stop him from acting out. When he’s around his sire, though, he has no choice when it comes to actions, which I understood. After finding out about his sire and what happened to him, I knew why he wanted a cure.
I liked learning the vampire lore in this book, even if it dragged a bit, especially when Clara was trying to discover a cure for vampirism for Raleigh. One of the most unique things in this book had to do with the castle that Raleigh lived and Clara was held captive. The way it read the intentions of people and wouldn’t let that person go where they wanted to go. Clara was getting frustrated with it. You’ll have to read the book to find out more about it.
There is also other drama in this book that happens that involves Clara and her father. And once again, Raleigh is not the bad guy in this book, and that’s all I’m saying about that.
When it came to the romance between Clara and Raleigh, it’s a slow burn. If you expect a lot of steam or spice in this book, there isn’t much. There really isn’t anything until toward the end of the book, and this is after the characters finally admit their true feelings. There are trust issues, which is understandable, and they need to work through things.
The ending felt a bit rushed when it came to dealing with the actual antagonist that was threatening them, but I did like how there was a twist at the end.
Overall, I give this book four stars, and I’m definitely looking forward to reading more books from Lily Crozier.
