I will forever be a Paranormal Romance girlie and always seek out vampire romance stories. When the reading challenge I’m participating in required me to read a vampire romance and fated mates storyline, I decided to try A Quick Bite, the first book in Lynsay Sands’s Argeneau series. It’s been on my TBR for a long time, and I’m glad I picked it up. Sadly, it didn’t hit the mark with me as much as I hoped, and I’m sad it didn’t because it had potential.
I found the storyline for Lissianna and Greg a little quirky and silly, especially with a vampire like Lissianna having a phobia that Greg is supposed to cure since he’s a doctor specializing in phobias. Greg’s supposed to be on vacation, not kidnapped and tied to a bed, which he allowed when he got in the trunk of his kidnapper’s car. Lissianna has no idea why a man is tied up in her bed at first, but maybe he’s a birthday gift. When her mother tells her the truth about why he’s really there, she feels bad for Greg and helps him escape with the help of some cousins and others introduced in this book. Her mother won’t be happy since he’s supposed to be treating Lissianna’s phobia so she doesn’t end up like her father. Also, Lissianna has put Greg’s life at risk with the council helping him escape, but with help from her cousins and other vampires, she’ll do whatever she can to keep him safe.
Some of the things that bothered me when reading:
- Greg doesn’t act scared when he’s kidnapped. He actually wants to spend eternity with Lissianna from the very beginning without knowing who or what she is and without asking any questions. Don’t get me started on how he reacted when he found out what her phobia is that he is supposed to cure. (Once again, he has no clue she’s a vampire until eventually she tells him the truth, and even then he’s not really scared.)
- The phobia that Lissianna had was a little over the top for me to believe, especially with how she has to handle it. She’s over 200 years old and hasn’t figured out a fix yet. Not until the end of the book is it realized the best way to deal with it.
- The storyline’s pacing was all over the place, which drove me crazy. There was also a lot of repetition about Lissianna’s phobia and other things that took me out of the story.
- There’s a slight mystery where Lissianna is targeted, and she’s not sure who or why, but it was not the book’s top priority. It is finally revealed who is targeting her, which wasn’t very dramatic to me because I suspected who was behind it from hints in the book and couldn’t believe Lissianna was clueless.
What I liked in the book:
- I loved learning about the vampire lore in this book and how they feed in the present day, compared to the past. This is when Lissianna’s phobia is a problem and why her mother was determined to get her fixed because of what happened to her father. (Once again, no spoilers from me.)
- All the Argeneau characters were introduced. They were comical at times and kept me reading. I loved how Greg just went along with all the Argeneau family members and their crazy tactics, including Lissianna’s mother, whom he still couldn’t believe he let kidnap him.
- I liked the fated mates aspect and how it’s revealed why Greg and Lissianna are fated to be together. It was a little different from other vampire books I’ve read. Once again, no spoilers.
Overall, this book was an okay read for me, and I give it three stars. It fulfilled two of my prompts for my reading challenge, which I’m good with. I had to remind myself that this was the first book in the series, so it has a lot to unpack.
Will I pick up the second book? Yes, I think I will eventually. I’m curious where Lynsay Sands takes the next book and want to learn more about the vampires in this world. It’s definitely unique and has my attention.
Would I recommend this book? Yes, even if this book was an okay read for me. I’ll still recommend it. If you enjoy reading a light-hearted low stakes Paranormal Romance with a fated mates storyline and some humor and steam to it with a meddling family that can’t mind their business, then check out A Quick Bite.
