I’ll admit I was a little hesitant to read Eternal Kiss of Darkness by Jeaniene Frost because it was Mencheres’ book. After reading the second and third books in the Night Huntress series, I didn’t know how Mencheres would redeem himself after what happened in those books. I’m glad I picked up this book, though, because I can officially say, at least for myself, that Mencheres definitely redeemed himself. He is one of my favorite MMCs in the Night Huntress World series.
I got to know Mencheres a lot better in this book, and I actually felt terrible for him. He’s gone through a lot, especially since he’s an ancient vampire who has sired a lot of vampires, including being Bones grandsire. He’s in danger of having his powers stolen by someone from his past, so he decides to do something Bones and everyone else would not be happy about: put himself in danger. He’s lived a long life, and he feels it’s best for him and everyone else if he disappears forever so the person after his powers does not get them. What he does not expect is a human private investigator named Kira Graceling, who is willing to risk herself to save him from being unalived by some ghouls.
Kira isn’t aware of the paranormal world until she sees Mencheres in danger, and now she’s forced to stay with him until he can eventually wipe her memories of him and the paranormal world. Unfortunately, he realizes he can’t just let Kira go, especially once he’s intrigued by her. The longer he’s with her, the more attached he becomes, and the more he puts her at risk.
Kira Graceling is one FMC I absolutely adored right away, not only for her strength in going up against paranormal creatures like ghouls, but also for how she handled someone like Mencheres. She is also devoted to family, even when one of her family members is using her. She has such a warm heart, which makes her perfect for Mencheres, who has never experienced someone like her before. Another thing I liked about her is that she is a kickbutt heroine who can handle herself and not a damsel in distress.
This is one emotional book that put me through the wringer. Every time I read Mencheres’ POV, I wanted to go through the book and have a talk with him, but I didn’t have to because Kira was there to do that. I’m so thankful Kira saved him when she did; she made his life brighter and actually showed him love, something he hadn’t experienced before, especially with his last lover. (You’ll need to read At Grave’s End to find out what his lover tried to do to him. No, I’m not giving her the title of wife because she doesn’t deserve that title.)
When it came to the antagonist, Radje is truly one everyone is going to hate immediately. I couldn’t stand him, that’s for sure. I swear each antagonist Jeaniene Frost has written has been more evil than the last. I really couldn’t stand Radje and am glad he was taken care of at the end of the book. If there is one thing to take away from this book, it is to never go up against Mencheres. There is a reason why he has all the power he has, and anyone else who would have it would just abuse it.
I loved how Bones and Cat show up in this book, too, and Bones and Mencheres make up after what happened in the third book. They definitely needed to make up.
Overall, this is such an emotional and tense book that was hard to put down, and I give it five stars. I wish I could give it way more, but sadly these review sites won’t let me. Jeaniene Frost is definitely one author whose books I will always autobuy because of her action-packed, tense storylines and unforgettable and lovable characters.

Would I recommend this book? Yes. If you enjoy reading paranormal romance that reminds you of some of your favorite vampire shows, like Vampire Diaries, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Angel, then check out this book. I highly recommend the Night Huntress series, too, which features Cat and Bones.
