The USA Today bestselling author of Business Casual, B.K. Borison is back with a whimsical new holiday romance—this time with a magical twist—that will have everyone falling in love with the Ghost of Christmas Past.
He’s the Ghost of Christmas Past. She’s not exactly Scrooge.
Ghost of Christmas Past Nolan Callahan intends to spend this holiday haunting like every other—get in, get out, return to his otherwise aimless existence as a ghost awaiting the afterlife. But when he’s faced with Harriet York, the sweetest assignment he’s ever had, he suddenly finds himself wishing for a future.
Harriet York has no idea why she’s being haunted. She’s a good person—or, at least, she tries to be. A people pleaser to her core, she always does what’s expected of her. But as she and Nolan begin to examine her past, they discover there are threads that bind them together— and realize there might be more to moving on than expected.
With the deadline of Christmas Eve fast approaching, will they find the key to their futures in each other’s pasts? Or will they stay firmly in the present, indulging in their unexpected, spirited connection?
Filled with magic, mayhem, and cozy holiday charm, this swoony romance is B.K. Borison’s best yet!
I finished Good Spirits by B.K. Borison the end of last month (July 2026) and am just now writing my review. Normally, I save holiday books for the actual holidays, but I figured, why not? I’ve been hoping for cooler weather, and reading a holiday romance seemed like a good way to set the mood. This was a cute story from B.K. Borison, but unfortunately, it won’t be my favorite.
Here’s a quick summary of the story: Nolan Callahan, the MMC, is the ghost of Christmas Past. He haunts people to help them look back at their lives. His latest assignment feels different from the start, especially when he starts to fall for the person he’s supposed to help, which is against the rules. Harriet York, the FMC, doesn’t know why she’s being haunted. At first, she thinks Nolan is just someone who broke into her house, but once he shows her his magic and demands a few things from him, she eventually goes along with him to revisit her past, even though she still thinks he’s got the wrong person. As Harriet spends more time with Nolan, she starts to like him, but she also wonders if he’s really there for her, especially when his magic takes them to places she’s never seen before.
What I liked most:
- The Ghost of Christmas Past: I thought it was a unique twist for a romance, having a ghost fall in love with the person he’s supposed to haunt, even though Nolan knows there could be consequences if he cares for Harriet.
- I really liked Harriet. She’s so down-to-earth and loves antiques and everything about Christmas. If she were real, I’d want to be friends with her. At first, I didn’t see any reason for Nolan to haunt her, so I agreed he must have made a mistake. But as the story went on, I started to see where B.K. Borison was taking things, and I ended up enjoying the direction.
- Nolan was interesting, not just because he’s a ghost, but also because of his backstory. I especially liked learning how he became a ghost in the first place.
- The side characters that stood out, especially Harriet’s Aunt who I loved, especially since she was more of a mother than Harriet Mom’s. I loved how Harriet inherited her Aunt’s Antique store. (I really didn’t like Harriet’s mom and even her sister. You’ll understand if you read the book.)
That said, I’m giving this book 3.5 stars. The romance between Nolan and Harriet did take a bit, but when it did happen, I didn’t really feel like they had enough connection for some reason. The story focused more on the magic, especially as Nolan tried to figure out why Harriet was being haunted. I also expected more holiday details, since it’s supposed to be a holiday romance, but the holiday part was mostly just the setting. Even though it’s not my favorite from B.K. Borison, I still enjoyed it and would recommend it if you want a cozy, fun read to help you get through this heat wave. Maybe if we all read more books set in the winter months, the weather will cool down. *Crossing fingers*
P.S. One thing I really enjoy about B.K. Borison’s books is that they’re set in Maryland. I lived there as a kid and miss eating steamed crabs the right way and visiting Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Reading these books makes me want to plan a family trip back because it’s been such a long time since I visited.
What to Expect:
🌲Holiday Romance
❄️Magic Realism
🌲Hero Falls First
❄️Grumpy/Sunshine
🌲Forced Proximity
❄️Slow Burn

About B.K. Borison

USA Today Bestselling author B.K. Borison is the author of cozy, contemporary romances featuring emotionally vulnerable characters and swoon-worthy settings. When she’s not daydreaming about fictional characters doing fictional things, she’s at home with her family, more than likely buying books she doesn’t have room for.

My obsession with reading started over 30+ years ago when I went to my first Scholastic Book Fair and found R.L. Stine's Fear Street series. Later, I came across Anne Rice's novels at my public library when I was fourteen when my obsession with vampires started. I was the girl who preferred to be a vampire over a princess any day. My husband says I would leave him a heartbeat for a vampire that looked like Spike or Angel (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) or Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Diaries. (It's true, though, and he's accepted it.)
