"A beautifully crafted, thrilling red-hot romantic suspense." Goodreads reviewer.
He protected me from danger and became my biggest threat.
He’s my defender. My savior.A brutally determined man with a cocky smirk and an equally cocky attitude.
Broad. Strong. Focused. He seduces me with his flirtation.Warms me with his care.
But he’s hiding something. There are ulterior motives beyond his concern for my security.A thirst for more than my safe keeping.
I can’t fall for him. Can’t be tempted by his touch. Not when he can’t be trusted. But questioning my protector means I’ve now become his target.
Decker is the second book in Eden Summers’s Hunting Her series. I was eager to read Decker’s story since he made a strong impression in the first book, Hunter, where he was first introduced. I was keen to discover who he had fallen for, and finding out it was Keira Torian added an unexpected twist to the story. She’s the younger sister of Cole Torian, the villain from the first book, who still plays an antagonistic role in the second book.
Decker is Hunter’s best friend, and both work for Cole Torian. After a drive-by shooting occurs at the beginning of the story, Decker is assigned to protect Keira. However, he struggles with his growing attraction to her, knowing that resisting it will be difficult whenever they are in close proximity. Keira, for her part, has also been intrigued by Decker since he began working for her brother. The complication arises from the fact that both characters are hiding secrets from one another, which will make it challenging to build trust with one another.
I really enjoyed getting to know both Decker and Keira in this book. Decker is determined to protect Keira while also struggling with his growing attraction to her. Despite his feelings, he knows he can’t completely trust her because of her family, and he’s keeping a big secret from not only her, but others too. Keira is a strong character, especially considering her family circumstances and what she endured in her youth. I can understand why she has issues with her family, and her determination to uncover the truth about what they are involved in adds depth to her character.
I loved the mystery in this book and its unexpected twists, especially since both characters are hiding secrets from each other. This element kept me engaged, as I needed to find out if either character would finally reveal the truth and whether the antagonists would be dealt with by the end of the story.
Unfortunately, this book is rated only 3.5 stars from me because I didn’t feel a strong chemistry between Decker and Keira. They had some obvious issues to resolve, and their recurring trust issues affected their relationship throughout the story. Perhaps if I read the next books in the series, their chemistry might become more believable. Despite this, I did enjoy the story and look forward to reading the next book in the series.
