three-half-stars

Without mercy, there is no love in this third installment of the Sons of Sinclair historical romance series by award-winning author Heather McCollum.
Gideon Sinclair, the third Sinclair brother, judges everything in stark terms of good and evil. There is nothing in between, and he is efficient at passing judgment without mercy. Now that his clan has conquered the warring Mackays, Gideon starts the process of integrating them into the Sinclair Clan. He will sort the people, punish the bad, and better the lives of the good. Judging is as easy to him as breathing, until he meets Cait Mackay, who steals his breath...along with his Sinclair ring.
A young widow, Cait Mackay has given her life over to helping the orphaned children in the clan. But love won’t put shoes on their cold feet and food in their stomachs. Cait tired years ago of seeing the rich get richer and the poor suffer more and more, so she decided to do something about it. An agile thief of the rich by night, when she is caught, the new conquering chief must decide her fate.
When Gideon realizes that the thief is the same woman who had already captured his attention, he hesitates for the first time in his life. Letting her get away with her deed leads to more trouble when she is accused of stealing from King James and is arrested. Now Gideon must commit his own crime against the Scottish crown if he is to save Cait. But can a man who was raised to honor and uphold justice break the law for the woman who’s stolen his heart?

I haven’t read a lot of Historical Romance, but I’m working on changing that by adding more to my reading list. A couple of years ago, I read the first two books in the Sons of Sinclair series by Heather McCollum and have been meaning to finish it. I actually met the author at a convention, and she definitely convinced me to read the series when she mentioned it’s set in Scotland during historical times. She also sold me whens he mentioned that the audiobook narrator narrates the books with a Scottish accent. I will always purchase an audiobook when the narrator does accents, especially Scottish. It’s one of my favorite accents. (My late mother-in-law was Scottish, and I always loved talking to her.)

Brief Storyline: Gideon Sinclair, the MMC, is the third brother in his family. He sees everything as either good or bad and is usually strict about punishment. But when he meets Cait Mackay, the FMC, he hesitates for the first time. Even though he knows she did wrong by stealing, he can’t bring himself to punish her as he normally would. Instead, he tries to help and protect her, even when it means questioning everything.

Here’s what I loved about this book:

  • Cait’s determination to protect the orphans, even when it means risking her own safety or putting others in danger, especially when one of the orphans is accused of something.
  • I enjoyed the opposites attract storyline between Cait and Gideon. Gideon always follows the rules, while Cait tends to break them, though she has her reasons.
  • Gideon is interested in Cait from the start, but their relationship develops slowly, which I liked. Cait is a widow, and it’s mentioned that her late husband wasn’t kind to her. When Gideon learns this, he wants to show her what real love should feel like.

However, I did have some issues with the book. Cait put Gideon in danger, especially with everything the Sinclair brothers are already facing, including the threat of war and trouble with the crown. The pacing and some repetition, especially around Gideon’s backstory and his relationship with his father, pulled me out of the story at times. Still, I enjoyed the book overall and would give it 3.5 stars. I’m planning to read the next book in the series, especially since it’s about Bàs. I have a feeling he’ll be my favorite Sinclair brother.

Standalone or Part of Series: This is an interconnected standalone in the Sons of Sinclair Series.

POV: Third person (Dual POV)

Would I recommend this book or series? Yes. If you like reading Scottish Historical Romance with a protective Highlander who falls for his opposite, you should check out Highland Justice by Heather McCollum.

About Heather McCollum

I am Heather McCollum, writer of 16th and 17th century Scottish romance full of adventure and intrigue, sprinkled with humor, history, and spice. Brawny Highlanders and feisty heroines are my favorite characters!

I am also a mom of three kids, dog-mom of one rescued geriatric golden retriever, and wife of one 6 foot 4 inch Highlander. When I’m not trying to help my kids make it through the day, baking things I see on The Great British Baking Show, or writing, I’m usually educating women on ovarian cancer (I’m a nine-year survivor).

I love kilted heroes, chai lattes, and eating buttered air-popped popcorn for dinner on Friday nights (my dog loves this one too).
