Saving an abducted baby . . . will put this pregnant sheriff right in the crosshairs . . .
Acting Sheriff Cat Jameson fights to keep a desperate abuse victim safe. But the woman is later murdered . . . and her newborn baby gone. Still, the seven-months-pregnant officer's determined investigation soon convinces her that prime suspect Dylan Walker is not only innocent but is himself being targeted. As clues reveal a sinister, viciously lethal conspiracy, Cat and Dylan can only trust each other. But as the shattering truth from both their tragic pasts hits home, can they save more than one life in time?
After reading the first book in B.J. Daniels’s Silver Stars of Montana series, I was eager for the next, Missing: Baby Doe. This installment follows Acting Sheriff Cat Jameson, who, while pregnant and expecting a quiet tenure, is thrust into a high-stakes case when a pregnant woman is murdered and her newborn abducted. The main suspect, Dylan Walker, is linked to the victim for some reason, even though he doesn’t know her personally and is haunted by his own recent loss. Cat races to solve the case, questioning Dylan’s involvement and working to rescue the missing baby as she uncovers that there may be more at play.
I enjoyed this installment and these characters. Cat’s determination to solve the case and find the missing baby resonated, especially since she’s pregnant too. I liked Dylan as well. He seemed grumpy at first when Cat confronted him, understandably so after losing his wife to a bombing and being harassed by her friend, who just won’t leave him alone. He just wanted solitude until the Acting Sheriff disrupted his world. Despite initial tensions, he bonds with Cat and becomes protective of her, even though she can handle herself. Their shared grief over loved ones lost connects them, and I loved how the investigation brought them together.
The book is full of suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat moments and unexpected twists. Some twists I saw coming, others surprised me. Cat and Dylan uncover a conspiracy connected to Dylan’s wife, his brother, and the murdered pregnant woman, and I was there along the ride, figuring it out with them.
Overall, this was another emotionally gripping installment, and I give it four stars. I’m so glad I picked up the first book in the series. Being introduced to B.J. Daniels has left me eager and excited to devour more of her heartfelt, suspenseful stories.
