Rule of a Kingdom is a prequel to Rina Kent’s Kingdom Duet, available for free on her website. This novella introduces Jonathan King’s story, making it a valuable read for anyone wanting insight into his character before the main duet, especially if you’ve read about him in the Royal Elite series. I’m eager to see if my opinion of Jonathan changes because I didn’t like him in that series.
This prequel sets the stage by revealing Jonathan’s story and the appearance of a mysterious woman who resembles his ex-wife. The dual points of view immediately begin building intrigue, hinting at a connection that will unfold in the main duet with these two characters.
Though brief and light on action, this novella succeeds as an introduction that raises questions and builds anticipation for the full duet. I want to see if Rina Kent can change my mind about Jonathan and how the new female character handles his complexity, since he’s not a good guy, he’s a morally grey character, which Rina writes very well.
Overall, Rule of a Kingdom lays an effective premise and earns a 3.5-star rating. If you plan to read the Kingdom Duet, start here for essential context.
