Nothing is fair in war.
Jonathan King is every bit his last name.Powerful.Untouchable.Corrupted.He’s also my dead sister’s husband and way older than me.When I first met him as a clueless child, I thought he was a god. Now, I have to confront that god to protect my business from his ruthless grip.Little did I know that declaring a war on the king will cost me everything. When Jonathan covets something, he doesn’t only win, he conquers. Now, he has his sights on me.He wants to consume not only my body, but also my heart and my soul.I fight, but there’s no escaping the king in his kingdom...
Reign of a King is the first part of a duet and is not standalone.
Reign of a King is the first book in the Kingdom Duet by Rina Kent. Despite my hesitance of starting this duet due to encountering Jonathan King in the Royal Elite series, I decided to read his story. My main takeaway after reading Reign of a King is that Jonathan remains the epitome of an antihero; my reading experience with this novel confirms he has not softened since his introduction in the Royal Elite series, so don’t expect a white knight. You are either going to love him or hate him. I’m still debating how I feel about him.
Aurora knows that Jonathan is sinister, and when she needs assistance with the company she’s had, she knows he’s the last person she should ask for, but Jonathan won’t let her get anyone else’s help. Jonathan will give her an ultimatum that she can’t refuse, or she’ll lose the one thing she’s worked hard on, but she knows the closer she gets to Jonathan, the more she suspects he has something to do with her sister’s death, and she knows she’s in danger if she allows him to control her.
I will say this: reading Jonathan’s POV makes me understand Jonathan a little better, but I know he’s still as cruel as ever, especially with how he treats his late wife’s little sister, Aurora (aka Clarissa). If there is one thing I’ve learned in the Royal Elite series and now this duet (so far) is that Rina Kent knows how to write an antihero.
When it comes down to Aurora’s character, she definitely has a dark past stemming from discovering her father’s actions against women when she was young. He has it out for her in this book, and let’s just say her life is in danger, and only one person can truly protect her. Also, her relationship with her father definitely explains her deep-seated trust issues with men, including Jonathan. I would be the same way if I were her.
The cliffhanger in Reign of a King reinforces the necessity of reading both books in order. Overall, I give this book four stars, and I can’t wait to read the conclusion to this duet.
POV: First Person (Dual POV)
Cliffhanger: Yes (It’s the first book in the Kingdom Duet.)
Would I recommend this book? Yes. If you are looking for a Forbidden Enemies to Lovers story, then check out Reign of a King by Rina Kent. If you enjoy reading New Adult Dark Romance, then check out the Royal Elite series. The first three books follow Aiden King, who is Jonathan King’s son.
Audiobook Recommendation/Review: If you enjoy listening to your books, I highly recommend this audiobook, especially if you enjoy your books being Duets. The narrators, Shane East and Keira Stevens, are fabulously cast for the characters and bring the story to life in your ears.
What to Expect:
✔️First Book of Duet
✔️Age Gap Romance
✔️Billionaire Romance
✔️Enemies to Lovers
✔️Forced Proximity
