A woman on the run…
I came to Longtooth, Alaska looking for a safe place to hide. All I wanted was to keep my head down, do my job, and enjoy the peace and quiet. But there’s no peace to be found once I meet Longtooth’s cantankerous bush pilot. Caleb Kinoyit is surly and rude and mean. He’s also, unfortunately, the most attractive man I’ve ever met. And as the long, Alaskan winter nights stretch on, I find myself warming to his rough charm just as much as I’m falling for the beauty of my new home.
A town with a secret…
There’s something different about Longtooth—something the locals won’t talk about with outsiders. And I am definitely an outsider. But when my dangerous past finally tracks me down, Longtooth can’t keep its secrets from me any longer, and the revelation upends the world as I know it. The only truth I can be sure of anymore are my feelings for Caleb. But will love be enough to save me? Or will I have to sacrifice myself to save the ones I love?
Cold Hearted is the first book in Heather Guerre’s Tooth & Claw series, and it’s also the first book I’ve read from this author. It definitely won’t be my last. I enjoyed this mysterious, suspenseful PNR set in Alaska. I read it for my Romanceopoly January Study Session (Read a PNR with a small town setting with a winter theme). It lived up to the small town setting and winter theme, and it’s perfect to read when it’s cold outside. I did just that since it’s been unbearable even in the Panhandle of Florida during winter. I’m ready for Spring.
It’s been a while since I picked up a shifter romance, and I’ve missed reading them. I really enjoyed the storyline in this one. It’s a slow burn romance and a paranormal mystery because the FMC only suspects the locals she’s living with are wolf shifters. She’s moved to a small town in Alaska to start fresh and get away from someone causing her trouble. No one knows why she’s there except her, which leads the pilot who brought her to treat her horribly. The pilot, Caleb, doesn’t trust newcomers in his town and doesn’t know what to make of Grace, even though he can’t seem to stay away from her. Grace is treated well by others in the town, but not by Caleb, and she’s not going to let him get away with it. When the person she was hiding from finds her, the whole town, including Caleb, will be there to protect her.
This book had me hooked from the beginning, and I enjoyed the ride, especially with the mystery behind why Grace was in Alaska and what everyone was. I may have figured out what happened to her from some hints, but that didn’t stop me from reading. I wanted to know what would happen, especially once Caleb stopped being grumpy toward her, realized she was in danger, and would do anything to protect her.
This book is told solely through Grace’s POV, which I didn’t mind. I loved getting to know her, and she showed real fire toward the end, even if she put herself at risk to protect everyone. She wanted to handle it on her own, but the whole town, including Caleb, wouldn’t let her. I loved that she was a teacher and had her students read books she thought they would enjoy more than what was usually offered. (Seriously, this is why I fell in love with books because I had English teachers like Grace growing up.)
Even though I didn’t get his POV, Caleb was horrible to Grace at first, but he grew on me. I understood why he was hesitant to let Grace in because of what happened before, and he sensed something was up with her. He’s alpha-like and may come off cold, but he was falling for Grace from the beginning, even if he didn’t show it.
I loved everyone who was introduced in this book, and I loved how everyone came together when it came to Grace. This was the perfect read for me, and overall, I give it four stars. I look forward to reading the next book in this series and also checking out other books that Heather Guerre has written.
POV: Third Person (Single POV)
