Adria, wolf changeling and resilient soldier, has made a break with the past--one as unpredictable in love as it was in war. Now comes a new territory, and a devastating new complication: Riaz, a SnowDancer lieutenant already sworn to a desperate woman who belongs to another.
For Riaz, the primal attraction he feels for Adria is a staggering betrayal. For Adria, his dangerous lone-wolf appeal is beyond sexual. It consumes her. It terrifies her. It threatens to undermine everything she has built of her new life. But fighting their wild compulsion toward one another proves a losing battle.
Their coming together is an inferno...and a melding of two wounded souls who promise each other no commitment, no ties, no bonds. Only pleasure. Too late, they realize that they have more to lose than they ever imagined. Drawn into a cataclysmic Psy war that may alter the fate of the world itself, they must make a decision that might just break them both.
Tangle of Need is the eleventh book in Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling series. My goal for this year (2025) is to finally catch up on this series as well as its spin-off. I have been enjoying the series, and I’m thrilled that Nalini not only focuses on a new couple, Adria and Riaz, in this book but also continues the storylines of previous couples, such as Hawke and Sienna, as well as others.
When it comes to the main couple’s storyline, Adria and Riaz, I liked them both as individuals but didn’t connect with their romantic relationship. Both are kickbutt characters that take their jobs seriously. The issue I had was Riaz, the MMC, is hung up on another woman who is his mate, but he meets her after she’s married someone else, so he still harbors feelings for her. Meanwhile, Adria is mourning the loss of a relationship with someone who wasn’t good for her. Both characters are wounded and not ready for anything serious, but they are attracted to one another. They agree only to offer each other physical pleasure and nothing more, but eventually, feelings become involved, which only complicates things.
Throughout the story, I felt that Adria and Riaz were not meant to be together because Riaz still loves his potential mate and will never fully be emotionally invested in Adria, which is not good for her because I didn’t want her to get hurt again. It just didn’t seem fair to her. Then, they were constantly mean to one another, which made me not like them together, either. Eventually, Riaz realizes he has feelings for Adria, but once that happens, I’m still not convinced they’ll be a strong couple together. It’s just my opinion, but the whole time, I wasn’t fully invested in their story.
I was more focused on Hawke and Sienna’s storyline and how Hawke will do anything to protect Sienna from Ming, who is still a threat out there. Yes, the Psy are still a threat to the shifters and everyone, but there weren’t many scenes with them in this book like the previous book. I think Nalini is leading us into a further conflict between all of them soon, and I’m ready for the antagonists to be taken out, especially since they are targeting people I adore in the series.
Another couple that stole the spotlight from the main couple was Mercy and Riley. I was excited to find out more about these two, but don’t worry; I won’t spoil what’s going on with those two if you haven’t read this book yet.
Overall, this was a good installment, but not my favorite regarding the main couple. I give it 3.5 stars and look forward to reading the next book soon.
Would I recommend this book/series? Yes. If you enjoy reading futuristic paranormal romances featuring different couples achieving their happy ever afters, along with continuations of storylines from each book to the next, then check out this series by Nalini Singh.
