At last, Zoey has what she wanted: the truth is out. Neferet's evil has been exposed, and the High Council is no longer on her side - but she's far from done wreaking havoc in the vampyre world. First, a mysterious fire ravages the stables. Then, Neferet makes a devastating move that will test them all.
With the seeds of distrust sown and Darkness breeding chaos at the House of Night, everyone must band together - but that's proving to be more difficult than ever before. The twins are barely speaking and the House of Night's former enemy, Kalona, has now become their warrior, pushing their trust to the limit. To top it off, Zoey is pretty darn sure she might be losing her mind. She saw something when she looked at Aurox through the Seer Stone that she can hardly explain to herself, let alone her friends. Is it possible that Heath has come back in a different form? Is that why Zoey's so intrigued by Aurox, when it's so obvious that he's dangerous? And who would believe her if she told them? Zoey knows that following her instinct about Aurox might be just what they need to defeat evil . . . but if she's wrong, it could cause the destruction of those closest to her.
With the tension at a breaking point and friendships on the line, can the nerd herd come together to stop the spread of Darkness before it's too late?
I started reading the House of Night series many years ago and never finished it, so this year, it’s my mission to finish it finally. I had to reread books one through nine to refresh my memory of the story, and now I can start the series where I left off at book ten.
I definitely feel this series became too long and should have ended a couple of books back, especially with where the characters and story are going. Neferet is turning even more evil, which I’ve predicted would happen from the beginning of the series. She’s a grown woman still carrying a grudge against a teenager, and she wants revenge so bad that she is willing to hurt others over it for more power. Zoey has managed to convince the higher-ups that Neferet is a horrible person, and they are turning their back on her, but while this is happening, Zoey’s group is falling apart, too. One of them in the group is turning against the group and siding with the other group, which I never expected to happen.
I understand Zoey and the others have suffered tragic losses, especially Zoey. She just wants to live her life normally, and I feel for her character because she has a lot of responsibility on her shoulders. She lost so many loved ones in the series, and the most significant impact for her was Heath, but then there’s the possibility that Heath is living within the creature called Aurox, but no one believes her. Aurox has turned away from Neferet and wants to be good, and the only person who shows him kindness is Zoey’s grandmother, who ends up in danger in this book due to Neferet. He feels at fault for not saving Zoey’s grandmother and will try to prove to the others how much he’s changed. Even Kalona plays a role in this book, trying to show how much he’s changed, too.
There were a lot of POVs to keep up with in this book, and some were new POVs that I was not expecting to read, but I understood why we possibly needed that POV. But Erik’s POV is no longer required at this point, especially when he’s thinking about a young House of Night student. I don’t even understand why his character is still in the series because he’s not apart of Zoey’s group anymore.
Don’t get me wrong, I liked some parts of the book but didn’t like all of it. At this point, it’s become predictable, and I’m ready for Zoey and her friends to finally live happily without a disgruntled Neferet affecting them. Zoey deserves peace. I really wish I had read this book when it was released because I would have probably enjoyed it better since I’m only giving it three stars. I do plan on finishing this series, and hopefully, the last two books will have a higher rating.
