Return to the powerful, turbulent Psy/Changeling world created by the “amazingly talented” Nalini Singh, as a human detective finds himself working the most unlikely of cases—in the dark heart of a Councilor’s domain . . .
Max Shannon is a good cop, one of the best in New York Enforcement. Born with a natural shield that protects him against Psy mental invasions, he knows he has little chance of advancement within the Psy-dominated power structure. The last case he expects to be assigned is that of a murderer targeting a Psy Councilor’s closest advisors. And the last woman he expects to compel him in the most sensual of ways is a Psy on the verge of a catastrophic mental fracture . . .
Sophia Russo is a Justice-Psy, cursed with the ability to retrieve memories from men and women so twisted even veteran cops keep their distance. Appointed as Max’s liaison with the Psy, she finds herself fascinated by this human, her frozen heart threatening to thaw with forbidden emotion. But, her mind filled with other people’s nightmares, other people’s evil, she’s standing on the border between sanity and a silken darkness that urges her to take justice into her own hands, to become judge, jury . . . and executioner . . .
It’s been a while since I last picked up a Psy-Changeling book, and I’m so far behind in the series. I’ve decided to dedicate 2025 to catching up so that I can start reading the spin-off series as well. Nalini Singh is one of my favorite authors because her storytelling is so engaging that I feel like I’m truly immersed in the story alongside the characters. This was definitely the case with Bonds of Justice, which is the eighth book in the series.
Two things I particularly love about Nalini Singh’s books are her well-developed, memorable characters and her incredible world-building. I truly admire how she manages to keep everything so interconnected. Between this series and the Guild Hunter series, Nalini Singh is a genius at crafting Fantasy and Paranormal stories. More people really need to read her work!
I loved both characters in Bonds of Justice, especially the MMC Max Shannon, who is a cop. He had a small role in the series until now, and I was curious to learn more about him, so I was glad to see him in his own book finally. I also really enjoyed Sophia, the strong Justice Psy who teams up with Max to determine who is targeting the Psy Councilor’s closest advisors. Both characters have strong qualities that complement each other well. Sophia’s role as a Justice Psy is incredibly challenging and puts her mental well-being at risk. While she uncovers the person threatening the Psy Councilor’s closest advisors, she is essentially signing her own death warrant after the case. However, Max is determined to do whatever it takes to save her.
This book was touching, especially in how Max cared for Sophia and worried about what would happen to her in the end. It was clear from the beginning that he had feelings for her, and Sophia felt the same way about Max. He was someone she had never encountered before, which piqued her curiosity. I appreciated not only their professional relationship but also the personal bond that developed between them. They were truly perfect for one another.
This book touches on the Psy network having issues more, and Nikita shows up more in this book because she’s the one who asked Max and Sophia’s help. There are also previous couples that play a role in this book, too, and I always love being reunited with couples that have already had their HEA stories.
Overall, this is another fantastic installment in the series, and I give it 4.5 stars. I’m excited to continue my journey with this series for the first time. I have a feeling it will become like the Guild Hunter series for me, which I know I will reread multiple times since it has quickly become an instant favorite. If you haven’t picked up this series by Nalini Singh yet, you definitely should, especially if you enjoy Paranormal Romance.
What to Expect:
