Seconds after partaking of wine during a Catholic funeral mass, Father Miguel Flores is dead on the altar. Detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas confirms that the consecrated wine contained enough potassium cyanide to kill a rhino. And though the East Harlem neighborhood is a long way from the stone mansion she shares with her billionaire husband Roarke, it’s the holiness flying around St. Christobal’s that makes her uneasy.
The autopsy reveals faint scars of knife wounds, a removed tattoo—and evidence of plastic surgery suggesting “Father Flores” may not be the man his parishioners thought. Now, as Eve pieces together clues that suggest identity theft, gang connections, and a deeply personal act of revenge, she hopes to track down whoever committed this unholy act. Until a second murder—in front of an even larger crowd of worshippers—knocks the whole investigation sideways…
Salvation in Death is the twenty-seventh installment in J.D. Robb’s In Death series. I’ve been meaning to pick up the next installment and read it, but I got sidetracked; however, that changes now. I’m determined more than ever to catch up on this series, especially since J.D. Robb is still writing this series. I don’t know how she does it, but I hope she continues writing this series for years to come because this has become one of my favorite series ever since I picked it up years ago.
I will admit right away that Salvation in Death won’t be my favorite book in the series, but that is okay. Not every book will be a favorite. I think this one was mainly due to the type of case they caught in this book, which just didn’t keep my attention. It also had a slower pace to it than others I’ve read. Eve and Peabody are called on scene at a church after a Catholic priest is poisoned during a funeral mass. It’s up to Eve and Peabody to figure out why someone would want to hurt a priest, and the more they uncover about the priest and his death, the more they realize there’s something else going on and not all is as it seems.
It was an interesting case that Eve and Peabody were investigating. They end up finding out some things about the priest that even had the others at church confused. Like I stated in my previous paragraph, the pacing seemed slow in this book, and it dragged on for me. I wasn’t really invested like I have in other books. I still enjoyed reading the moments between Eve and Roarke and how Roarke helped her through the case, but it wasn’t really all in it like he usually would be. Then, there’s Peabody, whom I absolutely adore, and I love how she and Eve handle cases together. Some of the moments were funny between these two, like always. These two are truly the best partners ever. There’s a bachelorette party being planned during this book, and Eve isn’t really helping with it, but she’s being forced to go.
While the case in this book wasn’t as interesting to me, the characters’ interactions and relationships continue to draw me into the series. I rate this book 3.5 stars and look forward to reading the rest of this series because these characters have become like family. I need to know what happens next with them.
Would I recommend this series? Yes. If you enjoy reading Mysteries/Thrillers and don’t mind reading a long series, then check out the In Death series. Believe me, you’re going to fall hard for each of the characters that J.D. Robb has created. Eve and Roarke will forever be my favorite couple in a fictional series thanks to J.D. Robb.
