Bastien Smith is frustrated. A changeling male should be able to track his mate anywhere—through fire and hail, snow and rain. But he keeps finding and losing her scent in the city streets, ever since he first became aware of it two weeks earlier, when the elusive fragrance awakened the leopard within him...
Then Bastien is suddenly confronted with his prey. Kirby is an all-too-human woman who wants Bastien just as much as he wants her. But he can’t deny what his body and senses are telling him: there is a raging chaos inside of Kirby that he doesn’t understand, secrets that whisper awake at midnight and cause her terrible pain. If they’re to have any chance of forever, then he must solve the mystery that is Kirby...
Secrets at Midnight originally appeared in Night Shift.
INCLUDES A TEASER FOR ALLEGIANCE OF HONOR
(I read the novella in Night Shift)
I’m working my way through Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling series, including the novellas and extras. Secrets at Midnight is a novella set immediately after Heart of Obsidian. The story centers on Bastian Smith, a changeling searching for his elusive mate. He meets Kirby, who believes she is human, but Bastian suspects otherwise and is determined to help her uncover her true identity.
Despite being short, this story provided meaningful insights into Bastian and introduced Kirby well. The instant connection between them felt believable, given the story’s fated mate premise. I appreciated Bastian’s commitment to helping Kirby discover her true nature and how Kirby adapted after learning her identity. Her interaction with Bastian’s family, particularly Mercy, was a highlight. Once Kirby learns the truth, she adjusts quickly, and Bastian and Kirby achieve their happy ending.
Overall, I give this novella four stars and recommend reading it along with the other novellas, so you can get additional stories in the series that are just as enjoyable as the full-length novels. I look forward to reading the rest of this series, since I’m determined to catch up on it.
What to Expect:
✔️Paranormal Romance
✔️Shifter Romance
✔️Fated Mates
