Possible spoilers in review, if you haven’t read previous books in the series, especially book six, Cole.
Seeking Vengeance is the first book in Layla and Matthew’s Duet, and Book 7 in the Hunting Her series. As someone who has read the previous books in the series, I was a little nervous to read Layla’s book after what she endured in the sixth book, which happened to be her brother’s book. Now, she’s living life without her husband and is a single mother, and she wants nothing more than vengeance for what happened to her husband. She won’t have her brother’s assistance, but she’ll take things into her own hands to get the vengeance. What she doesn’t know is that someone is watching her when she’s spying on the Costa Family.
This is when the MMC, Matthew, is introduced, and I’m going to admit right away that Matthew is the whole reason why I enjoyed this book, even if he was hiding who he really is from the beginning. There is a reason why he hides his identity, but I won’t go into that. I loved how sweet he was and how protective he was of Layla, even if he didn’t initially know the reason why she was spying on the Costa family. When he found out what Layla was watching them for, he was all about helping her with her vengeance. He truly was the best part of this book, even if he was hiding things from Layla. Believe me, both he and Layla have drama due to their families in this book, and they find out they actually have a lot in common when secrets come to light.
Layla’s actions frustrated me at times, particularly her recklessness in going after the Costa family without considering risks to herself or her family. Her pursuit of revenge feels misguided, and her initial interactions with Matthew highlight that he is far better for her than her husband, especially for what he did to the family. When I learned more about Layla’s history with her husband, I understood why she was hesitant to let anyone in, especially Matthew, but he’s going to show her what love really is.
One thing I did notice in this book was that Layla’s daughter, Stella, receives limited focus in this story, because she’s away at boarding school. While I understand Layla’s caution, it serves as a reminder of her responsibility as a mother, especially since Stella is also coping with loss. She needs to be there for her daughter more than to get revenge.
There are twists that emerge as truths about Matthew come to light, and then Matthew finds out about Layla’s life, too, and the Costa family’s complexity is revealed. Not all are antagonists, though the father plays a significant role as a villain, as well as another character.
Overall, I found this book satisfactory, rating it 3.5 stars. I’m hopeful the sequel will be more gripping, particularly in Layla’s growth. The ending of this book highlights Matthew’s feelings for Layla, and I can’t wait to find out what happens next between him and Layla.
Standalone or Part of Series: Seeking Vengeance is the first in Layla & Matthew’s Duet. Based on my experience reading the Hunting Her series, I strongly suggest reading the books in order, since it will be a better experience. But, technically, this duet could be read without reading the others.
POV: Dual POV (First Person)
Cliffhanger: Yes
Would I recommend this book? Yes. If you enjoy Mafia Romance and alpha heroes, especially those Eden Summers writes, then you will appreciate Matthew. I know he’s joined my favorite alpha hero list with other heroes that Eden has written already. If you haven’t read the Hunting Her series, start from the beginning for the best experience.
What to Expect:
🖤Mafia Romance
🖤Hero Falls First
🖤Revenge Plot
🖤Alpha Hero
🖤Widow/Single Mother Heroine

My obsession with reading started over 30+ years ago when I went to my first Scholastic Book Fair and found R.L. Stine's Fear Street series. Later, I came across Anne Rice's novels at my public library when I was fourteen when my obsession with vampires started. I was the girl who preferred to be a vampire over a princess any day. My husband says I would leave him a heartbeat for a vampire that looked like Spike or Angel (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) or Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Diaries. (It's true, though, and he's accepted it.)
