Sam Kelly was her first love.

The last person Sam Kelly expected to pull wounded from the lake was Sophie Lundgren. Once they shared a brief, intense affair while Sam was undercover and then she vanished. She’s spent the last months on the run, knowing that any mistake would cost her life and that of her unborn child—Sam’s child. Now she’s resurfaced with a warning for Sam: this time, he’s the one in danger.

Now he’s her last chance.

Sam has too many questions to let her slip away again—like why she disappeared in the first place. This time he vows not to be seduced. But one look in her eyes, and the passion burns again, and Sam knows he’ll do anything to keep her and his child safe. However, Sophie’s dark past is more dangerous than he imagines, and the only way for either to survive it is to outrun it.

I love Maya Banks’ Historical Romance, but lately, I’ve been hooked on her suspenseful KGI series. The second book in the series, No Place to Run, drew me in with its tension and focus on Sam Kelly, a character I was introduced to in the first book, whom I was interested to get to know more about.

Dang it! I’m annoyed I waited so long to start this series, but I’m making time to read it now. I love fierce, strong heroines, and Sophie Lundgren is definitely one of them, especially after what she does to her father at the beginning of the book. That alone won me over. Now she’s on the run, not just thinking about herself, but also focused on who can help her, especially in her condition. She knows there’s only one person to turn to: the man she had some steamy moments with, who she fears will despise her when she tells him the truth about her past and why she’s been running.

Sam is about to have his world turned upside down, but there is one thing about him I learned in this book: he’ll do anything to protect Sophie, even if she initially kept things from him. And Sam’s family will be there to protect Sophie, too. I loved Sam Kelly in the first book and loved him even more in this book, even though he could be overbearing at times with Sophie, but that’s understandable with her life being threatened, and also due to her condition. He definitely is another alpha-type like his brother, Ethan, and if there is one thing I love in romance stories is alpha males.

I definitely enjoyed this book more than the first book because I had a hard time putting it down this book. I needed to know if Sophie was going to be safe from the person coming after her and if Sam would forgive her for keeping the truth from him. I was also there when they finally had their moment again with each other. They’re relationship was already established at the beginning of the book, and it was already steamy, but once they came together at the end, after everything, they were even more steamy. I loved how Sam’s family, especially his mother, stepped in to help Sophie, and Sophie got to finally have a family that was loving and caring for her.

I give this book 4.5 stars and can’t wait to read more of the series. Maya Banks has definitely won me over, and I’m excited to dive into her backlist after I finish reading the KGI series.

POV: Third Person (Multiple POV)

Standalone or Part of Series: Each book is an interconnected standalone, following new characters and a storyline, so they could be read out of order, but if you are like me, definitely read them in order.

Would I recommend this book? Yes, I recommend this for anyone craving a suspenseful, high-stakes, action-packed second chance romance.

I guess I should type a bio here. I'm FranJessca, or Fran for short. I'm the owner/reviewer behind A Book Lovin' Mama's Blog. I've been reading and reviewing books on my blog since leaving the Navy in 2011, and I will keep doing it as long as possible. My favorite genres will always be Romance & Fantasy, and I read every subgenre underneath those two genres. (Sorry, not a fan of nonfiction, so don't try to convince me to read it.)
My obsession with reading started over 30+ years ago when I went to my first Scholastic Book Fair and found R.L. Stine's Fear Street series. Later, I came across Anne Rice's novels at my public library when I was fourteen when my obsession with vampires started. I was the girl who preferred to be a vampire over a princess any day. My husband says I would leave him a heartbeat for a vampire that looked like Spike or Angel (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) or Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Diaries. (It's true, though, and he's accepted it.)
